Hurricane season is here: Let's be prepared

Dear Stakeholders,

Today is officially the start of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season, lasting until November 30. This rainy season comes with much uncertainty each year, but I am frequently reminded that being proactive will position you for the best possible outcome in the most undesirable circumstances. Therefore, preparation is critical, and I encourage everyone to take the steps necessary to complete their hurricane preparedness plans.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an average hurricane season with up to 17 named storms. However, unpredictability throughout the season still exists. Forecasters offer their best professional insight, but we cannot know the paths these storms will take or the severity at which each will develop. This raises our need to have a plan of action.

As energy partners helping Belize generate the greenest electricity and an essential service, we take our emergency readiness seriously. We have laid the groundwork with disaster preparedness activities happening year-round. Our operations department and management team have reviewed our Business Continuity and Disaster Management plans and held meetings to address procedures in the event we are severely impacted by heavy rains or a tropical cyclone.

Our Disaster Response plan and close working relationship with The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) means that we can minimize any disruption in operations and are prepared to issue timely communications to protect surrounding communities and towns. We also have an extensive network of industry partners locally and abroad should we ever require assistance in a disaster. Fortis Belize is prepared to respond to any challenges in the months ahead.

By supporting each other, we can all be ready. Check on a family member, friend, or neighbor today and ask if they have their family and business emergency response plans in place. Make sure to highlight evacuation routes, location of shelters, plans for food and medical supplies, and protection of animals and property. Our preparation, individually and as a community, can make all the difference. Let’s be prepared.

Sincerely,

Kay Menzies

Fortis Belize President & CEO
