Dear Stakeholders,
Today is Earth Day, and many are still unaware that this day has served us since 1970, having been founded more than 50 years ago. It began as a way of educating people and bringing attention to the environmental issues we face. This recognition is more crucial than ever today as we feverishly work to overcome serious climate change challenges, challenges that could have dire consequences if we do nothing. That is why I can appreciate this year’s theme, ‘Invest in Our Planet’. It is a call to every country, company, community, and citizen to act with intention.
The business of producing electricity has long been associated with pollution, lack of care for the environment, and being ‘dirty’ – everything Earth Day has sought to overcome. But in many regards, we have made and continue to make significant progress. In particular, Belize is ahead of many countries in our accomplishments in renewable energy.
At Fortis Belize, we are committed to doing our part to create a sustainable future for everyone. Our three hydroelectric facilities generate and contribute approximately 40% of the country’s annual energy supply. What we deliver to help power communities throughout Belize comes from a 100% ‘green’ and renewable energy source. The potential for Belize to continue to grow within the renewable energy space, is truly exciting.
Fortis Belize has also aligned its operations with ISO 14001 Environmental Standards. This means that our decision-making processes and operational procedures always assess the potential environmental impact and prioritize the preservation of our treasured natural resources. Our strategic partnerships are essential in accelerating the country’s energy transition. The work we are doing in collaboration with the National Meteorological Service to meet climate and energy resilience goals, and our long-term relationship with Friends for Conservation, are essential to accelerating the country’s energy transition and meeting the needs of future generations.
Lastly, we must remember that addressing climate change will take time and requires everyone’s commitment. Achieving success requires that we include and engage our youth in meaningful conversations, treating them as the future leaders they are. This, too, is how we ‘Invest in Our Planet’.
On that note I thank Howard Smith Nazarene Primary School students for joining the Fortis Belize team at 1° de Mayo Basketball Court and Park to participate in today’s tree planting exercise. I also want to thank the Benque Viejo community, Mayor Jose Rosales and Deputy Mayor Edgar Cocom Sr. for joining in with us. And I must also express my gratitude to my Fortis Belize colleagues who work daily, taking extra care to preserve nature as we generate 100% renewable electricity. Together we make a difference for our planet.
Happy Earth Day. Let’s celebrate it every day.
Sincerely,
Kay Menzies
Fortis Belize President & CEO
