Fortis Belize Limited Statement on Dam Operations During Flooding

Cayo District, Belize (Thursday, August 18, 2022) – Fortis Belize Limited (FBL) is aware of present concerns related to water levels at its dams and is reassuring the public that operations remain normal. FBL also wishes to advise that despite the recent extreme amount of rainfall and a rise in reservoir levels, there have been no spills so far this year.

Our dams, designed to store water for later use, mitigate potential flash flooding; their spillways allow excess water to flow downstream in a controlled manner so that water rises slowly and gradually instead. A spill event caused by extreme weather conditions is therefore considered a routine part of operations, particularly during the rainy season.

The National Emergency Management Organization and representatives of the Belize Government are regularly kept abreast of water levels at all sites and are fully aware of spills when they are likely to occur.

"We take the health and safety of our employees and the general public very seriously. Water levels at our dams are closely monitored as part of our normal safety practice. Our operations align with international best practices and in the event of a spill, all safety protocols are followed closely," - President and CEO Kay Menzies.
