2024 Hurricane Preparedness: Be Ready

Updated: Jun 7

Dear Fortis Belize Stakeholders,

June 1 marked the start of what is forecasted to be an active Atlantic hurricane season. With warmer ocean temperatures and La Niña conditions evolving, storm development is more likely this year. Once again this year, our dedicated Fortis Belize team is fully prepared and on high alert.

As part of our preparedness and mitigation strategies, we conduct ongoing inspections and real-time monitoring of the dams, and these measures are heightened during periods of heavy rain to keep you informed and protect our downstream communities.

When our dams are at capacity and we are faced with continuous rainfall, spilling is expected. During these times, our team will implement specific flood management protocols and we will work closely with NEMO and BEL to keep all stakeholders informed in a timely manner using all possible communication channels.

Your proactive engagement is also important. Fortis Belize encourages everyone to finalize their family’s hurricane preparations before a storm threatens. This will afford you the best chance of protecting life and property in the event a storm develops with little warning.

To be resilient, we must all make safety and preparedness our top priority.

Fortis Belize wishes all a safe hurricane season.
